Three western Iowa players named to Super Team

Three western Iowa baseball players have been selected to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association's all-state Super Team.

The Super Team is comprised of the IHSBCA's best 16 players, regardless of class. Senior catcher Bryce Berg of Carroll Kuemper, senior outfielder Eric Toole of Council Bluffs Lewis Central and senior utility man Taylor Kaufmann of Glenwood made the team.

Toole and Kaufman are repeat selections to the Super Team, and Toole also earned first-team honors in Class 4-A as a sophomore.

The coaches' all-state teams are different from the Iowa Newspaper Association's all-state teams, which were announced earlier and were selected by sportswriters from around the state.

Nineteen other WI players made either first- or second-team all-state in their respective classes. Ten were named first-team: Sioux City East's Austin Stubbs and Dom Thompson-Williams in Class 4-A; Sioux City Heelan's David Kerian and Paul Jacobson, along with Sergeant Bluff-Luton's Jake Wimmer and Carroll's Taylor Ostrich in 3-A; Carroll Kuemper's Chris Halbur and Cody Williams, along with Logan-Magnolia's Levi Ettleman in 2-A; and Coon Rapids-Bayard's Jacob Esdohr in 1-A.

Esdohr is a repeat first-team selection, while Ostrich, Wimmer and Ettleman move up from last year's second team in their respective classes.

The other nine picked up second-team honors: Lewis Central's Zach Larrison in 4-A; Denison-Schleswig's Jeremy Gallagher in 3-A; Underwood teammates Brandon Forrester and Dillon Robinson, along with Treynor's Jake Allen in 2-A; and Coon Rapids-Bayard teammates Gage Reis and Jay Carstens, West Harrison's Ethan Earlywine and Exira-EHK's Ryon Rasmussen in 1-A.

Forrester is a two-time, second-team selection, while Allen also becomes a two-time all-stater.

The coaches state player of the year is Mason City's Jake Peter, and its all-academic award goes to Fort Dodge St. Edmond's Anthony Flattery.

The IHSBCA also picks an academic all-state team, and seven of the 20 honorees are from western Iowa. They are: Lewis Central's Toole and Nate Connealy, Glenwood's Kaufman, Coon Rapids-Bayard's Esdohr, Treynor's Adam Schmidt, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson's Alex Korner and Shenandoah's Ryan Matheny.
