NORFOLK, Neb. — Lincoln Southwest went 1-3 on the leader board Monday to open a seven-stroke lead in the Class A girls golf tournament at Norfolk Country Club.
Gentry Carveth, a senior, leads Lincoln Southeast's Madison Romjue entering Tuesday's final round by one stroke after shooting an 81. In third is Emma Mabry at 82.
The Silver Hawks, seeking their first state title in girls golf, lead Grand Island 344-351 in team scoring with Norfolk third at 359.
Carveth's 37 on the front nine was four strokes better than anyone else in the field. But on the back nine, she incurred two double bogeys for a 44.
"I feel pretty good,'' Carveth said. "I just hope I can stay consistent. My chipping and putting were pretty good to me today. I was hitting the ball solid as well.''
Carveth is one of four golfers in the Silver Hawks' lineup who has won a tournament this year.
"It's only the first day," Southwest coach Jim Danson said. "We have a lot of golf left. There are a lot of good, quality teams out there. Grand Island is right there, along with Norfolk and Lincoln Pius.
"We have a long way to go but it's nice to know that our kids could come and play well. We are optimistic about winning it yet we are cautious because we know the quality of the field on this golf course.''
Danson said Carveth shot well.
"She had a great front nine but she kind of faltered on the back,'' he said. "Gentry is a competitor and she knows how to compete."
