Gering's Krzyzanowski claims runner-up finish in Class B

GRAND ISLAND - Kaitlyn Krzyzanowski capped a sensational season with a runner-up finish at the Class B girls state golf tour-nament on Tuesday at Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island.

The Gering junior finished one shot back of Elkhorn South's Ann Pearson with a two-day total of 158.

Krzyzanowski, who entered the final round in the lead by three strokes after carding a career state-tournament low 77 on Monday, shot an 81 on Tuesday.

"I was kind of up and down all day," Krzyzanowski said. "I didn't play so well on the front nine, but I came back a little better on the back nine. It just didn't go my way."

Paired with Pearson and McCook's Megan Vetrovsky, a birdie on No. 14 helped Krzyzanowski rally to pull even with Vetrovsky af-ter the McCook sophomore bogeyed No. 15. Vetrovsky followed that up with a double bogey on the 16th, while Krzyzanowski bo-geyed to grab a one-shot advantage with two holes remaining.

After all three golfers pared the 17th, both Krzyzanowski and Vetrovsky triple bogeyed the final hole, which allowed Pearson to escape with the title after she closed her round with five straight pars.

"It was just a rough last hole," Krzyzanowski said. "It was a rough finish, but I'm OK with second place."

The second-place finish gave Krzyzanowski her third state medal. She finished 15th as a freshman and placed third last year as a sophomore.

Krzyzanowski said she will continue to work to improve her game in order to put herself back in position to win next year.

"It's something I really want to do," Krzyzanowski said of winning a state title. "I'll keep practicing as much as I can, so I can im-prove my short game and get everything ready for next year and this summer."

Gering coach Annie Boggs lauded Krzyzanowski's successful season, which included a whopping eight tournament titles.

"It's not the ending that we were hoping for. However, she did a great job of putting herself in a position to win a state champion-ship," Boggs said. "It was kind of a tough finish, but all in all it was a really good year for her."

Krzyzanowski also felt proud of what she was able to accomplish throughout the season.

"I had a lot of accomplishments this year," she said. "It could have been better, but it could have been a lot worse. It's all right."
