Since Nebraska was the top school on her list, Millard South sophomore Madi Unzicker said there was no reason to put off accepting the Huskers' softball scholarship offer.
"The coaches, their philosophy of the game and how they teach their players the physical and mental aspects of the game, that's what did it for me," Unzicker said. "I've been to their camp the past two or three years, so I've kind of grown into the program."
Unzicker accepted Nebraska's offer on Friday. In doing so, the All-Nebraska designated player becomes the fourth known in-state recruit from the class of 2014 to commit to the Huskers. The other three — Gina Metzler of Papillion-La Vista, Kaylan Jablonski of Omaha Skutt and Faith Cain of Millard West — all committed in October 2010.
Because she has the most experience at catcher, that's the position Nebraska coaches are most interested in having Unzicker play. But because Millard South had senior and Creighton recruit Blake Ringle behind the plate, Unzicker played first base this season for the Class A state champion Patriots.
This fall, Unzicker hit .438, including a school-record nine home runs in her 19 extra-base hits. Unzicker had a slugging percentage of .844, an on-base percentage of .564, scored 39 runs and had 31 RBIs.
