Duke girls edge Ralston in holiday hoops

YORK - The York girls dug themselves a hole, but found a way out if it with a late offensive surge on their way to a 52-47 win over Ralston in the consolation game of the York Holiday Tournament Friday.

"We switched to a half-court trap and it was more effective than full-court pressure," said Duke head coach Matt Kern. "It gave us some good energy and we hit shots off it. We hit a lull there, but you just have to keep shooting and crank up the defensive energy."

Ralston took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Randi Henry with 6:05 to play in the second and the Rams kept the lead until the fourth quarter.

An 8-1 run midway through the second gave Ralston a 20-14 edge. York narrowly trimmed the edge as they trailed by four (22-18) at halftime.

The momentum stayed with the Rams at the start of the second half. Ralston opened the third with an 11-3 burst and built a double-digit advantage. Exactly halfway through the quarter it was 29-20, in favor of the Rams. A pair of free throws pushed the Ralston edge to 35-21 with under two minutes in the third.

The Dukes took over from there as they kept the Rams without a point in the final 1:41 and scored 11 points over the same stretch. The run was keyed by Hannah Riley and Erin Malleck, who combined for nine of the 11 points.

Going into the final eight minutes the Ralston lead was cut to three (35-32).

York closed to within one point twice in the fourth before taking the lead on a Riley bucket with 5:15 left in the game. Ralston tied the game at 42 with a free throw and hit a two to go ahead 44-42. The lead was four (47-43) on a Ram triple, but York had an answer down the stretch as they closed the game on a 9-0 run to complete the rally and win by five.

Riley led three York players in double-figures with 15 points. Malleck scored 13 and Megan Fletcher added 10 points. The Dukes went 20-27 at the foul line and hit two 3-pointers, both by Riley.

Rachael Otte led the Rams with 12 points. Ralston went 7-12 at the charity stripe and made four treys.

York moves to 4-3 on the season and will next be in action on Friday night in Gretna.
