Triniti Counter's highlight reel just keeps getting longer and longer.
The Scottsbluff/Gering swimmer enjoyed another stellar day in the pool Saturday, collecting two records in the final day of the Twin City Invite at the Splash Arena in Scottsbluff.
Counter, a senior who is one of the state's fastest swimmers, set the school record in the 50-yard freestyle with a blistering time of 25.14 seconds. She also broke the meet record in the 100 freestyle, finishing with a time of 55.11 seconds.
"Triniti swam phenomenally well," Scottsbluff/Gering coach Mike Hayhurst said. "She was ready to go. She looked great."
Counter's performance helped the Seacat girls earn a runner-up finish in the team standings with 321 points. Omaha Westside took the top spot with 478 points.
The Scottsbluff/Gering boys also had a strong showing, placing third with 219 points. Westside claimed the boys title with 364 points, and the Laramie boys were second with 343.
Collectively, Scottsbluff/Gering recorded four new automatic state-qualifying times.
"I thought things went really well," Hayhurst said. "It was kind of a breakthrough meet for some of our kids. We got some autos out of the way that we've kind of been chasing for a few weeks.
"I thought we made a lot of progress. The kids have been working really hard, and it's showing. We had a lot of kids drop time."
The highlight of the meet for the Seacats was Counter's record-breaking performance. Counter, who already had qualified for state in the 50 free style, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 200 IM, had no trouble capturing wins in her individual events Saturday.
In the 50 freestyle, Counter bolted ahead of the pack right away and maintained a strong stroke to finish more than a second ahead of the runner-up finisher. Counter's time surpassed the previous school record of 25.4, set by Amanda Wells in 2000. Counter's previous-best time in the 50 was 25.5.
"She just blew it away," Hayhurst said of the record. "She was three-tenths under [the previous school record], and that's a lot. And there's even room for improvement there. So, it might make me re-think what she's going to swim at state. That was a heck of a swim."
Counter was just as impressive in the 100 freestyle, winning the event by more than 4 seconds over the second-place finisher. Counter's time broke the previous meet record of 55.38, set by Jensen Henry in 2005.
"Triniti had a great meet, and I knew she would," Hayhurst said. "She's such a hard worker. She just keeps improving."
The day also turned out quite well for sophomore Jon Wiebe, who earned an automatic time in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.95 seconds. He recorded that time as the leadoff swimmer on the 200 freestyle relay. The performance had to feel sweet for Wiebe, who just missed qualifying for state last year in the 50 freestyle. Wiebe on Saturday also placed second in the 100 freestyle.
The Seacat boys reeled in two other automatic times. The 200 freestyle relay team, which consisted of Wiebe, Austin Groskopf, Daniel Harshbarger, and Ryan Meister, earned a state berth by finishing with a time of 1:35.1. They placed second in the race behind Westside.
Scottsbluff/Gering's 200 medley relay also is state-bound after posting a time of 1:48.02. The foursome of Groskopf, Meister, Harshbarger, and Weibe placed third. Their automatic time was impressive, especially considering that Harshbarger is still hobbled by an ankle injury.
Hayhurst also lauded the individual performances of Groskopf in the 100 backstroke and Meister in the 50 freestyle. Groskopf lowered his time in the backstroke to 1:01.6, which earned him fourth place. Meister also enjoyed a big time drop, placing second with a season-best time of 23.46.
Scottsbluff/Gering's other new state berth came from Noah Miller, who on Friday became the Seacats' first diver to qualify for state since 2006.
Another swimmer who excelled in the invite was sophomore Jessie Sorensen, who lowered her times considerably in the 50 freestyle (fifth place, 28.53 seconds) and 100 freestyle (fifth place, 1:04.74).
"She's been improving a ton the last two weeks, and it really paid off for her this week," Hayhurst said.
Scottsbluff/Gering will look to gain more momentum next weekend when it travels to the Omaha Westside Invite. After that, the Seacats will travel to Columbus for the GNAC meet Feb. 10-11.
