A tough week of practice made most of Elkhorn/Elkhorn South’s swimmers a little slower Saturday, but it didn’t keep the Stormin’ Antlers from sweeping the boys and girls team titles at the Council Bluffs Lewis Central Invitational.
“We pounded them pretty good this week,” Stormin’ Antlers coach Chris Jenson said. “They were pretty beat up, but that’s the way it is this time of the season. It’s good to know they can respond despite being pretty tired.”
Elkhorn edged the co-op of Sioux City teams 353-314 to win the boys title while the girls team scored 450 points to top runner-up Omaha Skutt’s 316.
The Elkhorn girls won all three relays and two of the eight individual events. While none of their marks were season bests, Jenson said the way the girls competed was the most encouraging part to him.
“Without Ralston here, Skutt was our main competition,” Jenson said. “Duchesne swam really well. We didn’t have our best times, but we still found a way to win.”
One of the biggest drops came from Omaha Duchesne’s Jennelle Jarrett in the 50 freestyle. With a seed time well over 27 seconds, Jarrett won the event in 25.80.
On the boys side, the Stormin’ Antlers used their depth. Elkhorn didn’t win any of the relays but had two individual wins in a meet that included several of the top teams from Iowa.
Omaha Central set meet records winning both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Sean Froemming, Kurt Pavlik, Evan White and Lukas Meyer put together their second-fastest time of the season in the 200 relay by winning in 1:32.33. They currently are fifth in Nebraska in that event in 1:32.03.
Froemming, White and Meyer were joined by Chris Pospisil to win the 400 relay in 3:23.38, well ahead of the previous meet record of 3:25.16 by Elkhorn/Elkhorn South in 2011. That time was a season best for the Eagles by .03 seconds.
