Hatcher, O'Connor among western Iowan honorees

Several western Iowans picked up awards last weekend at the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association's banquet in Cedar Rapids.

Former Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson star Chris Hatcher, who eventually reached the major leagues with the Kansas City Royals, was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player, and Rick Admire of Sergeant Bluff-Luton entered for his coaching success.

Council Bluffs St. Albert graduate Brian O'Connor, now the head coach at Virginia, won the IHSBCA President's Award. Iowa Western coach Marc Rardin was named the two-year college coach of the year.

Those named district coach of the year were Lee Toole of Council Bluffs Lewis Central in the West District of Class 4-A; Steve Daeges of Harlan Community in the West District of 3-A; and Randy Snyder of Carroll Kuemper in the Southwest District of 2-A. Coon Rapids-Bayard's Kevin Reis was named the West District assistant coach of the year for all classes.

Kevin Osborn of Harlan was one of two umpires given a newcomer of the year award. Dan Pomeroy of Coon Rapids was named the Southwest District umpire of the year.

Toole earned an award for his 700th win, while Bob Mantell of Treynor and Kuemper's Snyder made the 100-win club.
