OMAHA - Scottsbluff/Gering senior Triniti Counter added to her already impressive season Saturday, and the Seacats recorded two more secondary state-qualifying times in the always-tough Omaha Westside Invitational.
Counter, one of the top swimmers in the state, captured the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.07, and she claimed the 100 freestyle in 56.18 seconds. Scottsbluff/Gering coach Mike Hayhust said Counter won both of her races rather easily.
"Winning those two events like she did was obviously encouraging because it's a very high-level meet," Hayhurst said. "Those were pretty convincing wins."
Dan Harshbarger registered one of Scottsbluff/Gering's new secondary state-qualifying times when he finished the 50 freestyle in 24.58 seconds. He placed 11th overall. Ryan Meister had the Seacats' other new secondary time, ending the 100 freestyle in 53.37 seconds, which placed him eighth.
Scottsbluff/Gering had a number of other swimmers fare well, including Noah Miller, who took sixth place in diving with 314.40 points.
"Noah's dive was really solid," Hayhurst said. "I thought he did a fantastic job. The judging here is pretty stiff."
Jon Wiebe also had a good showing, dropping 3 seconds off his previous-best time in the 200 freestyle. He placed sixth in 1:54.34.
Also for the Scottsbluff/Gering boys, the 200 medley relay team of Austin Groskopf, Meister, Harshbarger, and Wiebe placed fifth in 1:50.08.
In the team standings, the Scottsbluff/Gering boys placed seventh with 81 points, and the Seacat girls were 10th with 41 points.
"Overall, I thought our kids competed really well," Hayhurst said. "The meet lasted about eight hours, so that makes it tough to stay focused the whole time. At the end of the meet, we started to slow down a little bit, but they were really spirited and competed hard the whole meet."
While many Seacats recorded excellent times, Hayhurst said his team's main objective in the meet was simply to compete hard.
"We just wanted to get out there and race and support each other," he said. "I think we accomplished that goal."
Scottsbluff/Gering will now have a little break before competing again. The Seacats' next meet will be the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Meet Feb. 10-11 at Columbus.
The Seacats will begin tapering - their last morning practice is Monday - in preparation for the conference meet and the Nebraska state meet Feb. 23-25 at Lincoln.
Scottsbluff/Gering will have an intersquad meet Friday beginning at 5 p.m. at the Splash Arena. Hayhurst said that meet gives swimmers who won't attend the conference meet a chance to compete again. The Seacats also plan to use the intersquad meet, which is being billed as Senior Day, to help them determine which events some swimmers will compete in at the conference meet.
Although Hayhurst is pleased with the progress his team has been making, he said it's important that his swimmers continue to make strides in the next week.
"We want to try to sharpen some things this week and fix some little mistakes we're making," Hayhurst said.
