Islander girls slip past Columbus

One race was enough to help the Grand Island Senior High girls swimming team take control.

The Islanders, who trailed by two points after the 100-meter backstroke, went 1-2-3 in the 100 breaststroke. That helped GISH pull ahead to stay and take an 89-81 victory over Columbus Thursday at the Grand Island YMCA.

Krista Van Wie, who will walk on at Nebraska, won the race at with an automatic state qualifying time of 1 minute, 20.33 seconds, while Indiga Hadford and Gigi Brennan were second and third, coming in at 1:23.70; and 1:29.53, respectively.

"We knew it was going to be a close dual," Islander coach Brian Jensen said. "Going 1-2-3 in the breaststroke really helped us and that was what won us the meet. We were strong in a few more events, especially late. I thought we had more depth than they did. I do think though the girls were better focused late in the meet."

Grand Island won six more events. Van Wie captured another automatic state qualifying time in the 200 individual medley at 2:34.32. Amy Wahlmeier won the 50 freestyle at 29.99 and 100 freestyle at 1:06.77. Carly Wahlmeier took the 400 freestyle at 5:05.96, while Cassie Watts claimed the 100 backstroke at 1:11.88.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Wahlmeier sisters, along with Watts and Van Wie, won the race at 1:59.14.

The Islander boys dropped a 106-60 dual to Columbus 106-60. Luke Van Wie was the lone winner for the boys in taking the 50 freestyle with an automatic state time of 25.24. He also won the 400 freestyle at 4:41.21.

Jensen said Columbus was too much, especially with defending state champion Ryan Miksch.

"I thought the boys competed very well," Jensen said. "Columbus has a nice boys team with an outstanding swimmer in Miksch. The boys are still gaining confidence."

Grand Island is scheduled to compete in the Elkhorn Invite Friday and Saturday. But there's a chance the meet might not take place because of weather concerns. Jensen said he hopes the meet will still go on.

"We usually have kids perform very well in that meet," Jensen said. "It's a nice pool with great competition."
