SWIMMING

Meet records fall before snow does

Both Ralston/Omaha Gross and Elkhorn/Elkhorn South got a head start on postseason momentum Friday with victories at Elkhorn's Fete Fling swimming and diving invitational.

The Ralston/Gross boys edged the host Stormin' Antlers 558-552.5 for their first invitational win of the season while Elkhorn's girls rolled to a 200-point victory by scoring 549.5 points.

"We weren't shaved and rested, but I think the kids prepared very well and wanted to have a good showing at this meet," Ralston/Gross coach Docker Hartfield said. "This was part of our strategy to swim well as we turn the corner for the championship meets, and we were right on the money today."

The Fete Fling originally was scheduled for Saturday but was bumped up a day because of the threat of heavy snow. The Millard South boys invitational, also scheduled for Saturday, was cancelled, making the Elkhorn meet the final invitational before the four Feb. 11 conference championship meets.

Ralston/Gross was paced by sophomore Garrett Cadotte, who set meet records in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Cadotte solidified his hold on fourth place in the IM with a season-best swim of 2:00.22.

Just as he did at the Jan. 28 Omaha Westside Invitational, Cadotte shaved another second off of his IM time. He also jumped to No. 2 on the 100 fly chart with a 53.03. The only swimmer ahead of him in that event is Columbus senior Ryan Miksch.

Cadotte also moved into third place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.60 leading off the Rams' 400 freestyle relay. Only Miksch and Omaha Creighton Prep's Will Raynor have gone faster this season.

The other Ralston/Gross individual event winner was senior Addison Boschult in 1-meter diving. He also set a meet record with an 11-dive score of 532.70 points.

Elkhorn's boys won all three relays and four individual events. Nick Kirklin moved from fifth to third on the season leaders list by winning the 100 backstroke in 54.19, and the Stormin' Antlers' 200 freestyle relay quartet of Kirklin, John Overman, Mike Stein and Michael Mollak solidified its hold on third place with a season-best time of 1:30.84.

A chart-busting swim in the girls meet was turned in by Elkhorn freshman Bryn Lohrberg, who set a meet record by winning the 100 freestyle in 54.76. She's just the third girl in the state this season to go under 55 seconds.

Lohrberg also won the 100 breaststroke, an event she has led all season, in 1:09.50. Lincoln Pius X senior Lauren Smith equaled her state-leading time in the 50 freestyle by winning in 24.69.
