ALLIANCE - The Kimball boys golf team captured its fifth straight tournament title by winning the Alliance Invitational on Saturday at Skyview Golf Course.
The Longhorns finished with a 324 to edge runner-up Scottsbluff by three strokes.
"Going into the day, I had a pretty good feeling," Kimball coach Aaron Delhay said. "I knew it would take a good score to beat Scottsbluff, and I knew our guys were going to do the best that they could do."
Individually for Kimball, senior Jeff Greenwood carded a 78 to land in fourth place and Landon Smith finished in fifth with a score of 79. Henry Heeg just missed a top-10 finish with an 82, while Todd O'Hare rounded out the Longhorns' top four with an 85.
Laramie's John Murdock IV edged out Scottsbluff's Andrew Holloway in a one-hole playoff to take top individual honors. Both Holloway and Murdock IV shot rounds of 76.
Two other Bearcats finished in medalist contention. Michael Hadden and Curtis Welsh both shot 79 to place sixth and seventh, respectively.
Laramie finished behind Scottsbluff in third just three strokes ahead of Gering, which placed fourth with a 335. Sidney shot 340 to place sixth, Mitchell carded 352 for seventh, Alliance finished eighth with 357 and Chadron grabbed ninth with 363.
Other local golfers who won individual medals were Sidney's Austin Miller in ninth with an 80 and Gering's Reggie Reyes in 10th with an 81.
Kimball and Mitchell were the only two Class C teams to compete in the Division I field of the tournament. Delhay said that his golfers were ready to show the bigger schools what they were capable of doing on the course.
"Going into the season, our goal was to win all of our Class C invites," Delhay said. "It was just a goal of ours. We did it last year and we planned on doing it this year. The closer and closer we got to the Alliance meet, then Monday in Scottsbluff, I kept telling the guys at practice this week 'let's make it a goal to go in there and show the Class B schools that Kimball is a contender and we are a very good golf team.'"
In their five tournament wins so far this season, the Longhorns have out-shot their second-place counterparts by an average of 80 strokes. Before today's three-stroke win over Scottsbluff, Kimball's other closest finish came in a two-stroke win over Bayard at the season-opening Bayard Invite on April 4.
Bayard finished on top of the Division II team standings with a 366, just edging out Gordon-Rushville's 367. Bridgeport finished third with a 369.
Gordon Rushville's Renen Sahr carded a 78 to take home the Division II individual title over Sidney's Brendon Brown, who finished second with an 84.
The majority of the same teams will be in action on Monday for the Scottsbluff Invite held at the Scotts Bluff Country Club.
