KEARNEY -- The sun came out and shined on the Gibbon golf team.
“It was nice for a change to actually have some decent weather because the last couple meets haven’t been so good,” Gibbon sophomore Rylee Reinertson said.
Reinertson shot a 73 Tuesday at Kearney’s Meadowlark Hills Golf Course to claim medalist honors and lead the Buffaloes to the team championship. Gibbon shot a 317, while Kearney Catholic finished second at 326.
While there have been some ideal days for golf, Gibbon has been unlucky, drawing the few wet days and some windy days for tournaments.
“It was nice not having too much wind today,” Reinertson said.
Temperatures climbed into the 80s and higher as 15 schools participated in the 18-hole tournament.
Kearney Catholic’s Keegan Fitzgerald shot a 75 to place second, while North Platte St. Pat’s Jared Arensdorf was third with a 76.
“We played really well on the front side today,” Kearney Catholic coach Rick Petri said. “I was a little disappointed with our mental toughness on the back side. I think we struggled a little bit. The heat got to us a little bit, as it did for everybody, but sometimes you have to concentrate a little harder when the conditions aren’t favorable for you.”
Tyler Dowling, the Stars’ No. 1 golfer, shot an 80 to finish seventh. Collin Petri came in at 86 and wasn’t one of the top 15.
For Gibbon, Bennett Steele and Ryan Milks shot 81s and Brett Bendfeldt shot an 82 to put four Buffs in the top 12.
“We played some decent golf at times today,” Gibbon coach Paul Reinertson said. “I thought we hit the ball off the tee pretty decent and kept ball in play for the most part.
“I’m happy with our score, but I saw where we gave some shots away on the greens. The Meadowlark greens are pretty quick. They were probably rolling around 10 ½ (on the Stimpmeter) and the last tournament we were at they were probably around 7, so there was some adjustment today. I think at times we probably lost a few shots around the green.”
But around the greens is where Rylee Reinertson picked up some strokes.
“Today, overall, was a pretty good day. I didn’t make too many mistakes. I was pretty consistent,” Rylee said. “My short game was a lot better than it has been overall.”
