Omaha Fashion Week organizers have selected 37 designers to show their collections during this summer's six-day fashion show.
More than 60 designers applied for spots in the show, which will be held at KANEKO, 1111 Jones St., Aug. 20 through 25, said Omaha Fashion Week Producer Brook Hudson. That's down from the spring show, which drew about 90 applicants.
There's a reason for that, Hudson said: “The difference is our standards.”
The application for the summer shows required designers to submit detailed descriptions of their concepts and target market, she said. This led to a smaller but much more competitive pool of applicants.
Among those selected:
JLynn Hausmann, a Los Angeles-based designer behind JHaus, a line of premium denim;
Chad Carr, who is revitalizing the 1980s men's swimwear line Leggoons, which was founded in Omaha;
Buf Reynolds, who will construct gowns from white fabric, and then color the finished pieces with bathtub dye;
Kendra Morgan, who will present a collection of bridal gowns that take design cues from the tuxedo;
Audio Helkuik, a designer who normally shies away from color, whose collection will be composed of bold, monochromatic pieces;
Mai Do, whose collection is inspired by birds of paradise;
Omaha Fashion Week mainstay Dan Richters, who constructs garments that blur the line between sculpture and fashion.
Both Hausmann and Carr are using Omaha Fashion Week to launch national brands, Hudson said. And this summer's event attracted designers from Lincoln and Omaha, as well as Kansas City, Los Angeles and South Africa.
That shows Omaha Fashion Week is gaining a foothold beyond Omaha, and even beyond the Midwest, she said.
“I think Omaha is ready to be recognized as a fashion-forward city,” she said.
Tickets for Omaha Fashion Week will go on sale June 1, and range from $30 to $120 per seat. To purchase, find a link at omaha.com.
