A 22-year-old La Vista woman was sentenced Monday to two six-month jail terms after pleading guilty to two counts of negligent child abuse.
Michelle L. Polan left her twin nine-month-old children unattended on Sept. 9, 2011, while she was drinking.
Authorities initially charged Polan, who had no previous criminal record, with two counts of intentional child abuse, each punishable by up to 5 years in prison.
After the charges were reduced to misdemeanors, Polan requested probation – then failed to report for a pre-sentence investigation.
Sarpy County District Court Judge Max Kelch ordered Polan to serve her two jail terms concurrently, and gave her credit for six days in jail.
Her twins and a 3-year-old sibling are in the care of Polan’s mother.
Deputy Sarpy County Attorney Jennifer Miralles said Polan’s sister reportedly discovered the children alone in a basement after she heard the babies crying.
Polan’s sister contacted the La Vista Police Department after Polan did not return home for more than eight hours. Polan tried to sneak in through the back door around 6 p.m, nearly an hour after child protective services had removed the children from the home.
When a blood-alcohol test administered by officers showed that Polan was almost twice the state’s legal driving limit of 0.08, she admitted that she had been drinking all day at a friend’s house.
