Bellevue West junior Greg Stanek shaved three strokes off the tournament scoring record to win Wednesday’s Metro Conference boys golf tournament by six strokes.
Stanek had seven birdies in his 6-under 66 in ideal scoring conditions at Benson Park. Four players held the previous record of 69.
“Right out of the gate I had it going,” Stanek said. “A 350-yard drive down the middle on the first hole, and I got up and down for birdie. Then I birdied the next hole, so I’m 2 under after 2.”
His margin of victory also set a record, but it was much closer than that. Carson Schaake of team champion Omaha Creighton Prep stayed with him deep into the back nine and trailed by one with three holes left following Stanek’s only bogey of the day.
Schaake three-putted from 10 feet for a bogey on the par-3 16th, which Stanek birdied to leave him at 4 under. Stanek birdied the final two holes while Schaake double-bogeyed the 18th after a poor tee shot to fall into a second-place tie at par 72 with teammate Andrew Hansen.
“Carson made a real run at it,” Prep coach Morgan Helton said. “He got too aggressive at the par 3 and that changed his tenor. Stanek was playing lights out, though, and I don’t know if he could have been caught.”
Stanek said it was his lowest round in competition.
“I hit the driver well, hit good wedges,” he said. “Had a lot of one-putt greens. The greens were fast and you knew where the putts were going, but there wasn’t one easy pin out there.
“The course was in great shape, the best I’ve ever seen it.”
Prep’s 6-over 294 was the best team score by a Metro champion since 2006. Stephen Pfeffer shot 73, Alex Pieper 77 and Nick Kravchuk 80 as the Junior Jays won by 14 strokes over Bellevue West, which had its best Metro finish ever.
“Top to bottom, we had five guys make a strong showing,” Helton said. “We had great consistency.”
