Top 10 No. 1 Omaha Marian showed exactly why it deserved to be in the top spot Wednesday morning, disposing of sixth-ranked Lincoln East 3-0 in the first round of the girls state soccer tournament at Creighton's Morrison Stadium.
The Crusaders (17-1) moved into Friday's 6 p.m. semifinal against fourth-ranked Millard West.
Marian got on the board early when a Lincoln East defender was whistled for a hand ball in the box. Texas A&M recruit Jackie Tondl put it away for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. It was the 11th goal of the season for Tondl, a senior defender.
It may have been an East mistake, but the Crusaders' pressure tends to force those kinds of miscues, Lincoln East coach Chuck Morgan said.
“We make a lot of people make mistakes,” Marian coach Ed Dudley said. “It's just our style.”
Marian got its second goal later in the half when Amanda McClanahan gathered a loose ball left of the goal and sent a shot toward the wide post past keeper Alexis Harris. Teammate Alex Johnson met the bouncing ball on the back side to push it in.
Miami recruit Ava Ambrose added her team-leading 14th goal of the season seven minutes into the second half to make it 3-0.
Ambrose said the Crusaders' three-forward attack has had trouble clicking at times this season, but seemed to be on the same page Wednesday.
“We just kind of worked together well,” Ambrose said. “Up top it's been difficult, but we were composed today.”
Morgan gave credit to Marian, but was pleased with how his team performed.
“They're a good team. They've got some great forwards,” Morgan said. “But I think we played with them. I don't think we were run out of it.”
