GUTHRIE CENTER, Iowa — Chaley Rath has a way to stay fresh during a hectic track schedule: Drink lots of water.
Her solution was as simple as she made her events look during Thursday’s Iowa Class 1-A state-qualifying meet at Guthrie Center High School. The Treynor junior won all four of her contests, ensuring another busy meet next weekend at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“I kind of expected high jump,” Rath said. “Everything else I just had to work for.”
Rath easily claimed the high jump (5 feet, 7 inches), and also pulled out victories in the 100 hurdles (15.57 seconds), 400 hurdles (1:05.70) and shuttle hurdle relay (1:07.79). Even better, her Cardinals ran away with the girls team title over second-place Exira-EHK 177-126.
Rath was the only athlete to lock up four berths in state events Thursday. Only event winners are guaranteed to qualify in 1-A, while the next 12 best performances statewide will also advance. Those wild cards will be determined Friday.
St. Albert prevented a Treynor sweep by grinding out a boys team title 146.5-136.5. The Falcons finished among the top six in every event and won four.
Junior Josh Sindelar took the 3,200 in a season-best time of 9:52.50 and anchored the winning distance medley relay team — only his third time running in the event all year. The 800 relay and 1,600 relay also finished first. Junior Cole Herr and sophomore Tucker Culjat were part of all three winning relays.
“I thought we had a great day,” St. Albert coach Mike Kayl said. “I think our best races are for next week. That’s our plan.”
The Falcons will hold their breath for another few state qualifiers. Matt Vermillion (2:04.97) was second in the 800 and Sindelar finished runner-up in the 1,600 (4:37.07). In the 3,200 relay, Riverside shaved more than 24 seconds off its season-best mark to surprise St. Albert 8:16.00-8:17.30. The two times are among the best in 1-A.
The anchor of that relay team for Riverside, senior Cade Cleaveland, said the difference came from competing against another talented group. He also credited teammate Clay Harris, who joined the team midseason and has been steadily cutting time.
“Riverside has really improved its track team the last few years,” Cleaveland said. “To get multiple guys to state is awesome.”
Cleaveland himself might be going in four. He also won the 800 and 1,600 and is holding out hope for the distance medley, which checked in second at 3:54.88. Rick Williams will join Cleaveland in Des Moines after winning the shot put with a 47-9.5 distance.
Treynor will also be well represented on the blue oval next week. It won a meet-high seven events, including three each by Quentin Keuck and Connor Meis. Keuck claimed the 400 and 400 hurdles while Meis won the high jump and 110 hurdles. Both were in the top shuttle hurdle relay unit.
Fellow Cardinal Dane Livengood came away with the best marks in the long jump and 100.
The Treynor trio also will likely qualify in the 1,600 relay, as well as Livengood in the 200. Both events were second-place finishes by fractions of seconds.
“We wanted to come out and do the best we can,” Meis said. “We wanted to at least compete in the events we knew we could do well in.”
Other boys winners were A-H-S-T’s Bill Price (discus), Guthrie Center’s Tim Schachtner (200) and Exira-EHK’s 400 relay team.
Also for the Treynor girls, Laura Hempel had a hand in qualifying the 1,600, 3,200 and shuttle hurdle relay teams. Freshman Kayli Christensen (shot put) and junior Paige Volkens (discus) advanced for the Cards as well.
“We had some awesome performances tonight,” Treynor coach Gail Hartigan said. “When you have some personal bests, you can never complain about that.”
A number of other girls also punched state tickets in multiple events. Therese Frels of Guthrie Center is going in the 1,500 and 3,000, and teammate Leah Courtney advanced in the 800 and distance medley relay. Audubon’s Emma Konkler won both the 100 and 200, while Jennifer Neville of Exira-EHK earned top honors in the 400 and 400 relay
A-H-S-T’s relay team of Courtney Kardell, Taylor Baggett, Johnni Schueman and Shayla Bird won the sprint medley and 800 relay.
