OAKLAND, Iowa — It took more than 100 minutes, but Iowa Class 1-A No. 12 Underwood eventually outlasted Riverside 1-0 in penalty kicks in a grueling boys soccer contest Tuesday evening.
Two halves and two overtime periods weren't enough for either Western Iowa Conference team to score. The Eagles (10-3) outshot the home team roughly 3:1 but couldn't find the net during regulation.
“Play hard; that's what we do day in and day out,” Underwood coach Eric Rodgers said. “We practice hard, we play hard.”
Underwood won the shootout 2-0, with Wyatt Rasmussen and Jake Starnes scoring goals. Goalkeeper Sean Blakely blocked the first three attempts from Riverside (7-7-1), and the Bulldogs' fourth try rolled wide right.
