Omaha police said Thursday that they had identified a teenage girl whose body was found under the Blondo Street bridge over Cole Creek.
Melanie Koontz, 16, a freshman at Benson High School, was discovered dead about 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Police initially were called to the creek near 78th and Blondo Streets for a possible drowning. They have not said if foul play is suspected in the young Omahan's death.
Omaha Public Schools officials said Wednesday that additional grief counselors were made available for students at Benson High.
Kailyn Watson, OPS spokeswoman, said it was a proactive measure after rumors circulated on social networking sites about the possible death of a classmate.
Lt. Darci Tierney, a spokeswoman for the Police Department, said Thursday that the homicide unit continued to investigate the death.
