Memorial Day weekend will see an intermittent chance for storms in Nebraska and Iowa and sweltering heat to the east and southeast.
The weekend will bring the hottest weather of the year to major cities within driving distance of Omaha — such as Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo.
Temperatures in these cities and farther east in Cincinnati, Memphis, Nashville and Pittsburgh may feel like they're in excess of 100 degrees, according to AccuWeather, The World-Herald's weather consultant. Storms are expected to break that heat late in the weekend.
Temperatures in eastern Nebraska are forecast to climb into the upper 80s over the weekend, and on Memorial Day itself, the weather might be a little more pleasant with highs around 80.
If you'll be traveling or spending time outdoors this weekend, be sure to monitor weather forecasts and changing conditions.
In western Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming, forecast rain is very much needed to tamp down the fire danger.
