A pair of shootings only minutes apart Wednesday near Fontenelle Park left two teenagers critically wounded.
Police identified the victims as Trevaughn Hubbard, 16, and Calvin Cotton Jr., 15.
Hubbard was in extremely critical condition with injuries that were life-threatening, police said. He reportedly was shot in the head near 44th Avenue and Evans Street.
Emergency dispatchers said Cotton was shot in the back and leg only a few blocks away, near 48th Street and Meredith Avenue.
The shooting involving Hubbard was called in at 3:28 p.m.; four minutes later, Cotton was reported shot.
Police said Thursday that the two shootings appear to be related.
Vondra Whitlow said she was taking her grandson for a walk when she heard gunfire near 44th Avenue and Evans Street.
Whitlow, 38, said she heard two shots, then four more in rapid succession.
“And then this Expedition takes off up the street, with the back window busted out, and there was a young guy just laying there in the middle of the street,” she said.
Both victims were at Creighton University Medical Center, said Officer Michael Pecha, an Omaha Police Department spokesman. Police were investigating whether the shootings were connected, Pecha said.
Both teens just completed the 10th grade -- Hubbard at Blackburn Alternative High School and Cotton at Omaha North High Magnet School.
