Cabernet will meet the canvas when a new concept in the Omaha area opens at Aksarben Village this summer.
Village Canvas and Cabernet is expected to open in mid- to late July at 6457 Frances St., Suite 180. The new business will offer paint sessions with step-by-step guidance from professional artists.
Here’s how it works: Each participant will pay $35 and will be guided in painting a 16-by-20-inch canvas that the individual can take home. All of the supplies including acrylic paints, brushes and aprons are provided. The sessions last about 2½ hours, and there’s no talent required. Village Canvas and Cabernet will have a bar with beer and wine and will be available for private parties. Each session can accommodate 54 people.
There will be family canvas time, which will be less expensive, for children.
The business also will have a small gallery that will sell artwork on consignment.
Owner Kathy Byrnes, who is opening the business with her husband, John, said she’s excited to bring the art and wine concept to the Omaha area.
There are more than 300 similar businesses across the country, including the Corky Canvas in Lincoln, Byrnes said. She said many are franchises, but Village Canvas and Cabernet will be independently owned. The couple, who are also co-owners of Omaha’s Hot Shops Art Center, felt they had the experience to go on their own.
The couple learned about the concept while visiting a similar business in Denver.
“We came back, started talking about it and looking at locations,” she said. “What struck my husband is that it had a very broad appeal. It wasn’t all women. It was a very diverse audience on a Friday night and sold out several classes.”

Consignment store to host furnishings sale
ReRuns R Fun, a nonprofit children’s consignment store in La Vista, beginning next week is hosting its second Furnishings R Fun sale, offering home accessories, decor and furniture.
The sale items are new, purchased from showrooms at the home furnishing markets by volunteers with experience in interior design.
The sale will be June 1 to June 9 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 85th Street and Brentwood Drive.
Staffed by local volunteers, all profits are donated to charities that benefit children, including Food Bank for the Heartland, the Hope Center, Project Harmony, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands and a children’s facility in Honduras.
On June 7, most items will be discounted 25 percent and to 50 percent on June 8 and 9.
New franchises for Complete Nutrition
Omaha-based Complete Nutrition, one of the nation’s fastest-growing nutritional supplement retailers, has relaunched its franchise program after intentionally halting it in 2011.
The chain, which saw its revenue grow from $5 million in 2008 to a projected $100 million in 2012, added more than 80 stores from 2010 to 2011, expanding from 19 to more than 100 locations. Company executives responded to the growth by freezing new franchise development in order to support existing franchisees.
In the past 24 months alone, Complete Nutrition’s corporate support staff has grown from five to 50 employees.
The company plans to open 40 new stores this year, bringing the total across the U.S. to 165 locations. In the next three years, Complete Nutrition expects to add 125 more stores across the country, through agreements that are already signed.
