A 3-year-old boy was fatally injured Sunday when he was struck by a minivan in a church parking lot.
The child was identified by police as Christian Toliver. He was taken by a private vehicle to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
Police were still investigating the incident, said Officer Jacob Bettin, a police spokesman.
“He was a very happy little boy,” said Christian’s mother, Cassandra Toliver of Omaha. “He was very sweet and so full of life.”
Christian loved to play with his big sister, Samara, his mother said.
The accident occurred about 12:45 p.m. at New Life Presbyterian Church, 4060 Pratt St., after an 11 a.m. service had ended.
Many vehicles had already left the lot, but about 10 remained when the boy was struck, said Regina Bell, who lives across the street from the church. She was outside with her 26-year-old son when the little boy was hurt.
“It all happened so fast,” she said.
The mother screamed “My baby! My baby!” and sat down to hold her child while waiting for help. Bell said her son and someone from the church called 911, but a blue sport utility vehicle arrived and took the boy to the hospital.
The child victim unit was investigating the incident because it occurred on private property, Bettin said.
