GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — For the second consecutive Sunday, Andy Roberts came through with a big start with top-ranked Iowa Western facing elimination.
The sophomore lefty held No. 7 Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) scoreless until the seventh inning in a 4-1 Reivers victory on the second day of the NJCAA World Series.
Roberts (8-0), who threw a shutout last week in the Northern District final, retired the first 10 Pioneers he faced Sunday at Sam Suplizio Field. He pitched into the seventh inning, allowing an unearned run on six hits while striking out seven.
The Reivers (58-6) will face No. 6 Western Nevada (48-16) in their second elimination game Monday morning at 11.
Iseha Conklin doubled and scored in the bottom of the third and singled in a run in the fifth to stake Iowa Western to a 2-0 lead. The Reivers then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when Brandon Tierney and Keaton Steele scored on consecutive wild pitches.
Tierney was hit by a Jonathan Pulley pitch in each of his first three plate appearances.
Roberts left with a 4-0 lead in the seventh after Spartanburg’s Seth Neely reached on a one-out error and pinch-hitter Michael Keels followed with a single up the middle. Pascal Paul came on in relief for Iowa Western to retire the next two batters, though Neely scored.
The Pioneers (45-17) managed one hit and two base runners off Paul.
