A swimmer and a bicyclist required medical attention during Sunday's Omaha Women's Triathlon, but organizers said both were doing better by early afternoon.
The swimmer initially told volunteers in a nearby kayak that she was fine, then went under the water, said Alan Kohll, a co-organizer of the event. Rescuers pulled the woman about 50 yards to the shore of the Lawrence Youngman Lake and administered CPR, Kohll said.
The woman never stopped breathing, and after being examined at a local hospital, asked to finish the race. Kohll said her request was denied.
The second woman, whom Kohll said is a good cyclist, fell from her bike on the race course near 192nd Street and West Dodge Road. She remained hospitalized in stable condition Sunday afternoon. Kohll said the woman appeared to have suffered one or more fractures.
Kohll declined to identify the injured racers.
About 300 women participated in the triathlon — “and to the last finisher, had a great time,” Kohll said.
