Organizers of this weekend's Village Pointe Wine Festival are doing their best to convert the outdoor shopping mall's main street into a something that looks like it came out of Napa Valley.
They're bringing in tents, soft lighting and wine — lots of wine. Guests can expect about 150 wines from more than 40 wineries and distributors, said Dan Matuszek, president and general manager at Brix, one of the event sponsors.
The event on Friday and Saturday will also feature food, live music, fashion shows with clothes by both local designers and Village Pointe merchants, and the unveiling of the free Brix mobile app. Matuszek said the app allows users to categorize and keep track of their favorites wines, beers and spirits.
Concerts by the Finest Hour on Friday and The Innocents on Saturday are free and open to the public, said Kim Jones, Village Pointe marketing director. Both concerts will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a fashion show — also free and open to the public — during the 7:30 p.m. intermissions.
Jones said she hoped the wine festival, now in its second year, would complement some of the other Omaha events scheduled for this weekend — the Omaha Summer Arts Festival and the Warrior Dash adventure race among them.
