COUNCIL BLUFFS — Having Republican Mitt Romney in the White House would be “disastrous” for Iowa, State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald said.
“Job growth when Romney was governor of Massachusetts went from 36th place to 47th,” he said.
Fitzgerald and other Democrats held their own public event in response to Romney's rally Friday in Bayliss Park.
Though jobs were lost under Romney in Massachusetts, the opposite has occurred under Obama as president, Fitzgerald said.
“Iowa's unemployment rate is at a 36-month low, falling to 5.1 percent in April. What's more, we've gained 20,000 more manufacturing jobs since Obama became president.”
He said that if Obama's health care law is overturned, as Republicans want, 40 million Americans will be without insurance. Their health care expenses would be passed on to everyone else.
Fitzgerald also faulted Romney's position on wind energy. He said 7,000 Iowa jobs have been created in that industry.
What's more, Iowa farmers have received $15 million in rent payments for allowing wind turbines on their land, Fitzgerald added.
Romney has branded wind energy a “failure,'' he said.
