Spotted at: P. B. Gardens booth at the Village Pointe Farmers Market
What it is: Walnuts grown by Jason and Vivian Anderson in their gardens near Ulysses, Neb.
How to use it: Black walnuts have a very distinctive flavor unlike the milder English walnut. They taste rich and robust, making them a good choice to flavor ice cream and baked goods, but not so good for use in salads, stir fries or other savory dishes calling for walnuts.
Also spotted at the market: Zucchini, squash, new potatoes, fingerling potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, green leafy kale, chard, asparagus, carrots, okra, berries, cherries; beef, poultry, pork, lamb, eggs, cheeses.
