Katie Higgins’ dad, Tim, is crazy about Notre Dame sports.
So when it came time for the 6-foot-1 Kearney middle hitter to consider where she was going to play volleyball in college, she emailed the Irish, asking if they would be interested.
She also looked at North Dakota, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Tampa, Northeastern, South Dakota State and the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Higgins didn’t hear much from Notre Dame until coaches saw her competing at a tournament in Chicago in May. They invited her to a July camp.
A few days after coming home, she got a call, asking her to play for the Irish after her senior year in Kearney. After working with her at the camp, coach Debbie Brown said she would be a good fit.
“I was very excited. I accepted right away,’’ Higgins said. “They were my dream school.’’
Higgins, who has a 4.08 grade-point average, said she liked the school’s tradition and academic excellence.
“They have had the top business school for the past three years, and that’s what I’d like to study,’’ she said.
Higgins piled up a school-record 459 kills, 4.6 a game, for the Bearcats last fall, with a .337 kill efficiency.
She also plays for the Nebraska Juniors club team.
