BALTIMORE — Gold-medal and Nebraska Association-record performances by Kenzo Cotton and Andy Vasquez led a group of 20 Nebraska and western Iowa athletes who have medaled through the first six days of the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics.
Cotton, a junior at Papillion-La Vista who competes for the Bellevue Breeze, cruised to victory in the Intermediate Boys (ages 15-16) 200-meter dash Saturday in 21.27 seconds. That time is 0.04 seconds faster than the 21.31 Cotton ran in May to set the Nebraska state high school record — a standard that had stood since 1961.
Vasquez of the Cornhusker Flyers Track Club won the Youth Boys (13-14) 3,000 race walk in 15:32.59. Another Flyers athlete, McKayla Roberts, finished second in the Intermediate Girls 3,000 race walk and set an association record with a time of 16:18.73.
Two field event specialists also set association records. Katelyn Gochenour of the Flyers was second in the Youth Girls javelin with a throw of 142-0, and Lizzie Virgl of Wahoo was eighth in the Intermediate Girls hammer at 105-8.
