Seven western Iowa baseball players have been named first-team all-staters by the Iowa Newspaper Association.
The INA’s statewide panel of sportswriters selected the teams prior to last week’s state tournament in Des Moines. It named to their respective first teams Sioux City East junior Dom Thompson-Williams in Class 4-A; Sergeant Bluff-Luton senior Kendall Hazel and Sioux City Heelan senior Paul Jacobson in 3-A; Carroll Kuemper junior Chris Halbur in 2-A; and Council Bluffs St. Albert junior Jake Lewis, Treynor senior Cole Chapin and Coon Rapids-Bayard senior Gage Reis in 1-A.
Halbur becomes a two-time, first-team selection, while Thompson-Williams moves up from last year’s second unit in 4-A.
In all, 20 WI athletes were named to an all-state team, including five to their respective second teams. They are Sioux City East’s Taylor Pluim in 4-A; Harlan Community’s Ben Bruck, Atlantic’s Gunnar Blum and Glenwood’s Alec Forbes in 3-A; and St. Albert’s Ben Hecker in 1-A.
Hecker becomes a three-time all-stater, after making the third team last year and the second team in 2010. Bruck is on the second team for a second straight year.
Eight more from Western Iowa picked up third-team honors: Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln’s Alex Crowl in 4-A; Sioux City Heelan’s Tyler Stolen and Tony Myers as well as Denison-Schleswig’s Robert Lyons in 3-A; Carroll Kuemper’s Carter Ludwig in 2-A; and Treynor’s Alec Sorensen, Logan-Magnolia’s Quin Mann and Walnut’s Lucas Blum in 1-A.
Crowl is a repeat third-team selection.
The INA also named honorary captains in each of the four classes. The captains, who must be seniors, are West Des Moines Dowling’s Zach Coppola in 4-A, Dallas Center-Grimes’ Tyler Peyton in 3-A, Davis County’s Calvin Mathews in 2-A and Algona Garrigan’s Austin Vaske in 1-A.
A South Dakota State recruit, Coppola led the Maroons entering state in batting average (.421), runs (35) and stolen bases (19).
DC-G’s Peyton hit .471 with 18 doubles, six triples, 38 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. He also finished 10-0 with a 0.50 ERA, leading the Mustangs to the 3-A state title.
In 2-A, Mathews hit .460 with 19 doubles, 11 homers and 59 RBIs for the 42-2 Mustangs. He also went 13-1 with a 0.67 ERA and will play at Iowa.
For Algona Garrigan, Vaske hit .473 with 15 doubles, 13 homers and 62 RBIs. On the mound, the Iowa Central recruit was 11-2 with a 1.55 ERA for the Golden Bears, who lost to eventual champion Martensdale-St. Marys in the 1-A semifinals.
