GRAND ISLAND - A strong start in doubles play proved to be vital to Grand Island Central Catholic’s 5-4 dual win over Adams Central Thursday at Ryder Park.
The Crusaders claimed wins in the top two doubles spots, and that turned out to be the different after the teams split the six singles matches.
“In doubles we played really, really well,” GICC coach Bill Gavers said. “That got us off to a good start. Our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams were really sharp.
“Adams Central is a quality team and a quality program. Coach (Rod) Hartman does a nice job getting his team ready.”
Quentin Harshbarger and Taylor Hayes topped Levi Cermak and Schyler Bohlen 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. GICC’s No. 2 doubles team of Jaden Butler and John Rohweder defeated Zane Nelson and Grant Ostrander 8-1.
The Crusaders almost made it a doubles sweep, but the Patriots No. 3 team of Jordan Nash and Cody Levine outlasted Dylan Nordhues and Ryan Vitera 9-8 (7-3).
Harshbarger and Hayes have played together all season. Gavers has tried out other doubles combinations in the other spots, with Butler and Rohweder staying together after Tuesday’s Capital City Invite.
“We’ve tried different guys and looked at different combinations other than No. 1 doubles,” Gavers said. “Usually by the (Lincoln) Pius Invite (on Sept. 22) we want to have our state lineup set.”
Adams Central got wins in singles from No. 1 Nash, No. 3 Bohlen and No. 4 Nelson. GICC’s singles wins came from No. 2 Harshbarger, No. 5 Rohweder and No. 6 Vitera.
“Ryan Vitera did a nice job coming off a tough loss in doubles 9-8 to win 8-1 in singles,” Gavers said. “Quentin Harshbarger had a really, really good day. He was sharp in doubles.
“It was a good team effort. Everybody did their part.”
