Miller plays on for Dukes at state tennis

LINCOLN — Jared Miller at second singles is the lone Duke still playing today in state tennis.

Miller was seeded second with a record of 26-6 entering the tournament at the Abbott Sports Complex in Lincoln.

His first victim, Mount Michael Benedictine freshman Matthew Amao, wasn't up to the Duke senior's game and after sitting out a first-round bye Miller won, 6-1, 6-2.

Next to go was 17-9 and seventh seeded John Davis, an Omaha Brownell-Talbot/Concordia senior, 6-4, 6-1.

The final four players at second singles begin semifinal play at 9 a.m. today. Miller will face off against the No. 3 seed, 25-3 Quinten Harshbarger, a Grand Island Central Catholic sophomore.

At first singles Duke senior Creighton Loreman started with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Gering junior Brian Doll. In the next round Loreman fell to No. 2 seeded and 29-2 Jordan Nash, an Adams Central senior, 6-1, 6-0.

York sophomores Logan Cobb and Hayden Sandall downed Blake Wilberger, a freshman, and junior Logan Woodward of Scottsbluff, 6-2, 6-1 at second doubles. In the next round the young Duke duo fell to the No. 4 seed, 17-4 Dylan Nordhues and John Rohweder, a pair of Grand Island Central Catholic sophomores, 6-4, 6-0.

Charlie Briggs and Taylor Andrews, a pair of York seniors at first doubles, lost their first match to No. 10 seeded and 14-8 seniors Michael Byrne and Trey Martinez of Ralston, 6-1, 6-3.

“We had a good day as Creighton (Loreman) and No. 2 doubles were able to get first-round wins … and Jared (Miller) made it to the final four tomorrow,” said Coach Dan Malleck.

“We didn't get a first-round win at No. 1 doubles, but they had the toughest draw.”

At the end of play Thursday the Dukes were exactly in the middle of the team standings at 13th in the 26-team field.
