YORK – In the fourth set it appeared the BDS Eagles had no gas left in the tank.
They trailed in the match 2-1 and the Giltner Hornets were looking to pull away and hide in the set with a 14-7 lead.
But to the credit of the Eagles they never quit and pulled into a 22-22 tie before the Hornets scored the final three points to settle the championship match at the York City Auditorium.
Giltner lost the first set 25-20, but then won the next three by the scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-22.
It was attack or be left behind as both teams could not afford to give a free ball to the other team. The Hornets slammed 53 team kills and added to the unofficial 47 from the BDS Eagles the two teams combined for 100 kills in the four set match.
Bruning-Davenport-Shickley's Makaleigh Yantzi sparked the Eagles in the first set as she hammered eight of her game-high 24 kills in the first set alone. But then the Hornet defense slowed her down and held her to just nine through the next two sets.
Meanwhile the Giltner offense was clicking behind the three-headed kill monster of Abbey Preissler, Darby Hinrichs and Dani Most. Those three combined for 46 of the team's 53. Leading the way was Preissler with 18, Most right behind her with 16 and Hinrichs with 12.
The Hornets never trailed in the second set, however the Eagles pulled to within 12-11 on a kill from Christy Swartzendruber who finished with 11 in the loss. After the Hornets went on a 5-0 run to open a lead of 17-11 the Eagles never got closer than five points.
The third set saw the Giltner girls lead 4-1 and 6-3, but a kill from Yantzi trimmed the score to 7-5 and following two Giltner errors it was a 7-7 deadlock.
The score was still tied at 18-18, when the Hornets went on a 3-0 run with Preissler drilling two of her 18 kills in the match.
The match score went to 2-1 when Most and Hinrichs found the open court on back-to-back slams.
In the fourth set Yantzi tried to keep BDS hopes alive as she knocked down 10 kills in the set alone, and her 24th and final kill tied the match at 22-22.
Giltner got an ace block, a kill and the Eagles couldn't make the return on the 25th and deciding point.
The Hornets ended the match with five ace serves and six ace blocks, led by Most with three. BDS had five ace blocks, three from Yantzi, and four ace serves led by Swartzendruber.
