DONIPHAN, Neb. — Doniphan-Trumbull went with what brought it to the Class C-2 quarterfinals, and the result was a 35-6 thrashing of previously undefeated North Platte St. Patrick’s on Tuesday.
The Cardinals (9-2) were carried by running back Jordan Slough, who finished with 274 yards on 28 carries as well as a 95-yard punt return. And the Doniphan-Trumbull defense, after surrendering a touchdown on St. Patrick’s first possession, shut out the Irish the rest of the way.
“Tonight we played great defense, and we got an incredible effort from the offensive line,” Doniphan-Trumbull coach Brent Breckner said. “You can talk about the kids we have at the skill positions, but our line has been huge all season and tonight they just wore those guys down.”
The line combination of Grady Koch, Blake Treat, Joe Dinan, Eric Toben, Aaron Ediger and tight ends Creighton Buhr and Ian Askey dominated the Irish defense. And as the second half unfolded, the Cardinals found more and more opportunities to peel off big chunks of yardage.
“We gave up too many big plays tonight,” St. Patrick’s coach Kevin Dodson said. “The Slough kid is quite an athlete, but Doniphan-Trumbull is probably the most physical team up front that we’ve faced this year. They have quality kids at all the skill positions, but their line really led them. They’re a team that’s playing at a very high level right now.”
