You can ride your bike during the winter in Omaha. No, really.
“It's not as difficult as people imagine it to be,” said Julie Harris, of Activate Omaha. “If you can layer properly and make a few adjustment to the way you ride in the summer, you can ride all year long.”
Activate Omaha, a community health organization, is hosting a winter cycling clinic Sunday evening at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. A panel of cyclists who continue riding through the winter months will lead the 90-minute seminar. They will discuss proper clothing, gear, bike maintenance and safety.
Harris said the clinic is educational and will dispel the myth that people can only ride their bikes in fair weather. “We just want to make sure people don't reject the idea outright,” she said.
Activate Omaha also kicked off the second annual Winter Commuter Cycling Challenge this month. About 150 people are registered. They will log each trip they take by bike online through March 31.
The challenge was designed to encourage winter cycling. It will also provide city officials with data that will shed light on Omaha's bike infrastructure needs.
Anyone interested in the challenge can join any time online.
