Millard North's Aakre is named Nebraska's Gatorade player of the year

CHICAGO — Millard North’s Isaac Aakre has been named the Gatorade Nebraska football player of the year.

The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

He’s now a finalist for the national award announced next month.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior quarterback led the Mustangs (13-0) to the Class A state championship this season. A returning first-team All-Nebraska selection, Aakre rushed for a Class A-record 2,295 yards and 27 touchdowns on 357 carries. He also completed 34 of 56 passes for 507 yards and six scores.

In four state playoff games, Aakre ran for 751 yards and five touchdowns on 107 carries in addition to completing 17 of 25 passes for 265 yards and three scores. He concluded his career with 110 rushing yards on 22 carries while completing 6 of 8 passes for 106 passing yards and both Millard North touchdowns in a 17-14 victory against Omaha North in the Class A state title game.

Also a guitarist and choir singer, Aakre has maintained a B average in the classroom. In addition to donating his time as a youth football instructor, he has volunteered on behalf of his church, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Siena-Francis House homeless shelter, Ron Brown’s FreedMen ministry conference and the Nebraska Miss Amazing Pageant.

“Everyone knows Isaac Aakre’s carrying the ball, and it doesn’t matter,” Norfolk coach Tom Olson said. “He just forces his will.”

Aakre remains undecided with his college plans.

Recent Gatorade Nebraska football players of the year are Drew Ott (2011, Giltner), Tyson Broekemeier (’10, Aurora), Bronson Marsh (’09, Millard South), Tyrone Sellers (’08, McCook) and Baker Steinkuhler (’07, Lincoln Southwest).
