'Cats capture tourney crown

ELWOOD — Three Maxwell wrestlers won titles and 12 medaled as the Wildcats captured the Elwood Wrestling Invitational on Friday.

“We wrestled really, really well,” said Maxwell head coach Ryan Jones. “We showed a lot of depth with 12 medalists. A lot of guys stepped up and have gotten better.

“That’s always nice to see.”

Winning individual titles for the Wildcats were Drew Riggs at 138 pounds, Jaylon Sturdivant at 145 pounds and Dylan Gage at 182 pounds.

Maxwell won the tournament with 148 points. Kearney Catholic was second with 109, followed by Lexington with 80, Eustis-Farnam with 75, South Loup with 66, Cambridge at 62, Dundy County-Stratton with 54, SEM at 49, Arapahoe with 34, Elwood with 31 and Wauneta-Palisade with 9.

“I’m really happy with how things have gone in the first weekend,” Jones said. “We still have work to do. We have to get in a little better shape, but we have a lot of team unity and guys are really pulling for each other.

“We knew if guys hit their individual goals, we’d do well on our team goal, which was to win the tournament and it worked out for us.”

Maxwell placed three wrestlers in second, three in third and three in fourth place in the tournament. Getting runner-up were Josh Meyers at 120 pounds, Ethan Lunkwitz at 132 pounds and Kenny Essman at 195 pounds.
