Grand Island rolls to Kearney Invite title

KEARNEY — The Grand Island Senior High wrestling team claimed the Kearney Invite with 210 points Saturday.

The Islanders used 13 medalists with five champions to take the Invite by 40 points over Lincoln Southwest.

Dante Rodriguez (120 pounds), Andrew Rojas (132), Billy Thompson (152), Chase Reis (195) and Javier Silva (220) all captured championships for Grand Island.

Rodriguez pinned Bellevue West’s Jake Garner in 2 minutes, 41 seconds at 120, while Rojas earned an 18-8 major decision over Hastings’ Nate Marrow at 132. Billy Thompson captured the 152 title with a 5-0 victory over Kearney’s Jameson Oertle, and Chase Reis won the 195 championship by pinning North Platte’s Jason Lienemann in 3:02.

Silva captured his first varsity title with a 32-second pin over Columbus’ Fernando Gomez at 220.

Blake Coen (fourth, 106), John Mottl (third, 113), Trey Trujillo (second, 126), Jared Williams (fifth, 138), Brian Najera (second, 160), Haris Talundzic (fourth, 170), Jose Ceballos (fourth, 182) and Juan Medina (third, 285) were the other Islander medalists.

Grand Island will be back in action at the East-West Dual Classic at Kearney Saturday.
