CRETE — Balanced scoring and second-half free throw shooting provided the Class B, No. 7 Northwest girls basketball team to get to the winner’s circle.
The Vikings had five players score over seven points and were 11 of 15 from the free-throw line in the second half to lead them to a 51-45 victory over No. 8 Crete Tuesday.
McKenzie Brown led Northwest with 14 points, while Erin Sorahan added 10. Kaley Werner and Katie Placke added eight, while Morgan Westphal contributed with seven.
“It was a nice road win and a solid team effort,” Viking coach Michael Herzberg said. “When you can get three to five players close to double figures, that will make it hard to defend us. It’s early in the season and we’ll continue to grow together. We made our free throws in the second half and that was key.”
Northwest will be back on the road Saturday at No. 1 and four-time defending champion Seward.
