STROMSBURG – The Cross County girls could have rolled over trailing big to Sutton, but they refused to fold.
The result was a stirring comeback from 15-4 down at the first quarter break and 25-9 behind at halftime to within seven with 5:25 and again with 3:30 left in the game. But the Cougars ran out of time and fell to the Fillies by eight, 40-32.
Coach Stacy Portwine's Cross County squad saw Fillie Maria Van Kirk drain a three that made it 6-2 Sutton at 4:12 of the first. Van Kirk went on to score a game-high 19 points.
After halftime the Cougars began stirring to life and got a runner from Sadie Waller and a bucket off Cross County's break of the Sutton press by Brooke Anderson.
Anderson hit a 3-pointer at 7:07 of the fourth during a Sutton scoreless stretch of more than four minutes. When Anderson snaked in a two at 5:25 to play the Cougars were within seven, 32-25. They got to seven down again at 3:30.
The final points of the game came with 16 ticks left on a pull-up jumper by Anderson, who had a team-high 10 points, two assists, a steal and a rebound for Cross County. Sadey Waller added eight points, a team-high nine rebounds and two steals.
Van Kirk led all scorers with 19 for Sutton. No other Fillie netted more than seven.
The Cougars were 13-42 from all distances, 3-12 from three and 3-8 at the stripe. They committed 18 turnovers against Sutton's pressing defense. Points in the paint totaled 24 for Cross County.
The D-1 Cougars (1-2) host Meridian tonight. C-2 Sutton (3-1) entertains Lincoln Christian on Saturday.
