Heartland girls ambush Hampton in hoops

HENDERSON – After one quarter, it looked like Saturday night's game between the Hampton Hawks and the Heartland Huskies could go to the wire with Heartland on top 11-8.

After the second quarter that was no longer the case, however, as the Huskies opened a 23-9 lead at the break and things continued to go downhill for the Hawks in a 50-23 loss in girls' non-conference hoop action.

The Heartland defense was the reason as it put the clamps on the Hawks' Teya Mason, holding her to just 10 points after a pair of 20-points-plus games to open the season.

Heartland worked the ball inside all night to Sara Brune who responded with a game high 18 points on nine 2-point baskets, all chip shots from eight feet and in. Meanwhile on the perimeter, senior Mikaelyn Dick knocked down 13 points, hitting three treys in the win that moved the Heartland's record to 4-1 on the year.

Any chance that the Hawks might cut into the 14-point halftime deficit went away quickly as Dick opened the quarter with two 3-point shots and when the quarter came to an end the Hawks were looking up at a 40-12 Heartland lead.

Hampton was able to win the fourth quarter, 11-10, but the issue had been settled long before.

Other than Mason's 10 points, Hampton got five each from Kalynn Dahlke and Brittany Dose.

Hampton was 5-13 at the charity stripe, while the Huskies were 1-4.
