BRADY — Seven 3-pointers by the Southern Valley Lady Eagles spelled doom for Brady on Tuesday as Southern Valley went on to a 47-40 win. And none of the shots from behind the arc hurt more than the two Mikaela Hoxmeier hit to begin the final quarter.
Tied at 34-all heading into the fourth quarter, Hoxmeier let the ball go from behind the arc on the left wing to go up 37-34, just 30 seconds in. Thirty seconds later, the senior hit from the right wing for the six-point Southern Valley lead.
“Finally, finally,” said Southern Valley coach Darren Tobey. “We’ve been struggling to shoot the 3 all year.
“That’s one shot we have practiced a lot on so I was proud of the kids. They sat back there and still had confidence shooting the ball. I’m glad they finally went down.”
Brady coach Lance Arterburn said a change of defenses might of helped Southern Valley’s shooting.
“We played man the whole game,” Arterburn said. “I knew my girls were tired and we went to a box-and-one on Mckenzie Nielsen because she was killing us on the drive. We thought we would mix it up a couple of possessions and then Hoxmeier hit two [3-pointers] and we kind of dug ourselves a hole and just couldn’t dig ourselves back out.”
After a Baily Craig free throw put Southern Valley up 41-37, Brady’s Dakota Terry hit a 3 to cut Southern Valley’s lead to four with 4:53 remaining in the game.
Craig grabbed a rebound and scored. Mckenzie Nielsen hit two off a break and Emily Becker hit both of her one-and-one tosses to stretch the Southern Valley lead to 10 and eventually the win.
“We settled down a little and didn’t turn the ball over,” Tobey said. “We tried to play way too quick and made some uncharacteristic plays in the first quarter.
We settled down halfway through the first quarter and got away from it in the second quarter for about a two-minute span. Then we did a better job in the second half of taking care of the ball.”
Brady ran out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but turnovers helped Southern Valley get back in the ball game.
Terry opened the game with a drive to the basket followed by Josie Palmer hitting one-of-two free throws. Then Palmer had a steal and bucket and Sydney Widick scored two in the paint. In the final two minutes of the quarter it was all Southern Valley as they tied the score at 7 heading into the second frame.
“That didn’t happen,” said Brady coach Lance Arterburn of trying to cut down on turnovers. “It needs a lot of work.
“I thought the first three quarters, if we would just run our offense, I thought we were probably the better team — if we would just settle down.
“They were the better team in the fourth quarter. They played really good. We just didn’t build enough of a lead when we had our chance early and turned the ball over too much. We never really got into our offense that whole first half.”
Southern Valley took their initial lead of the game in the second quarter at 21-19 on two Becker free throws, but Brady’s Valerie Most hit a basket and free throw with just 6.5 seconds left giving her team a 24-23 lead as they left the court at half.
Down by four with :46 remaining in the third quarter, Palmer scored on an inbounds pass from Autumn Hild and Molly Hannon grabbed a rebound and put it back at the buzzer for a 34-all score heading to the fourth.
Free throws proved to be a problem for Brady, as they hit on only two-of-nine in the contest.
“We’ve struggled with free throws all year,” said Arterburn. “Last year we were really a good free throw shooting team with a lot of the same girls. We’ve practiced a lot on them and it looks like we need to practice a lot more.”
