Adams, Hessler finish unbeaten

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Colton Adams and Keegan Hessler both compiled undefeated records of 7-0 to lead the Scottsbluff wrestling team at the Pat Weede Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Gillette, Wyo.

Adams won his 132-pound weight class, while Hessler finished on top at 113.

“They both did a good job of winning their weight classes,” Scottsbluff coach James Miller said. “Keegan had a couple of tough matches, so that was a great finish for him. Colton did a great job of taking care of things for us, and getting some extra bonus points when we needed them. He put guys away and just did a good job of doing what he always does.”

Adams was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament’s lower weights.

The two-day duals tournament featured teams from four different states. Gillette’s Campbell County won the team title with a record of 7-0.

Scottsbluff finished sixth with a final record of 2-5. The Bearcats enjoyed much more success on Saturday, which resulted in a pair of wins. Scottsbluff downed Fort Collins 48-24 and beat Poudre, Colo., 48-36. The Bearcats’ lone loss Saturday was a tight 37-36 setback against Ponderosa, Colo.

“We had a lot better day today than we did Friday, so it was good for us to finish on a strong note,” Miller said. “We wrestled some good teams pretty well this weekend. Other than Douglas, we won’t see any of these other teams the rest of the year. It was a great chance for us to see different styles and different kids. Gillette does a great job of putting on their tournament.”

The tournament was Scottsbluff’s last action of the first semester. The Bearcats won’t be back in action until Jan. 5 when they host their annual tournament.

Miller said his squad has certainly had its share of ups and downs so far.

“It’s been bittersweet,” he said. “We’ve got some great guys in the room. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to put together a full lineup yet. That’s been frustrating at times because you know these guys are giving it everything they’ve got, but some circumstances are just out of our control and we haven’t been able to fill every weight class yet.”
