Bridgeport wrestlers claim home tourney

BRIDGEPORT — Bolstered by nine medalists, the Bridgeport wrestling team captured the championship of its home invitational on Saturday at Bridgeport High School.

Three different Bulldogs won their individual weight classes. Bridgeport also received four runner-up finishes and a pair of third-place finishes.

The youthful Bulldogs, who sport just one senior and wrestle five freshmen, topped the nine-team field with a winning score of 186 points. Morrill was second with 110 and Mullen placed third with 109.5.

“It was a real good day for us overall — a real good team effort,” Bridgeport coach Craig Johnson said. “I thought our juniors really led the way, but we also placed a lot of freshmen and sophomores.”

Capturing individual titles for Bridgeport were Dakota Swires at 120 pounds, Brandon Nichols at 138 and Lawrence Schneider at 152.

Finishing second for the Bulldogs were Adrien Dally at 113, Todd Widener at 126, Dylan Shaffer at 132 and Wesley Christensen at 145.

Bridgeport’s third-place medalists were Peyton Baumann at 126 and Will Frerichs at 285.

Even though some of the tournament’s weight classes didn’t feature a whole lot of competition, Johnson said winning the team title is a nice reward for how hard his squad has worked and improved so far this season.

“We’re off to a really good start. The meat of our season is after Christmas. It will get a lot tougher, but we’ve been pleased with the good start we’ve had,” Johnson said. “This tournament’s become smaller over the years. There weren’t too many kids in some weights, but some weights were very competitive.”

Morrill sported three individual champions. They included CJ Sidrow at 106, Matthew Unrein at 132 and Matthew Hessler at 285. The Lions also received a second-place finish from Alex Knouse at 138, a third-place finish from Seth Rudy at 145, and a pair of fourth-place finishes from Austin Descharme at 138 and Elvariste Gomez at 152.

Hemingford was the only other team to finish with multiple champions. The Bobcats earned first-place finishes from Cash Weber at 145 and Moses Ash at 220.

Other local champions included Minatare’s Marc Cinocco at 126 and Hyannis’ Emmett Hoover at 182.

Local wrestlers posting runner-up finishes were Hemingford’s Cooper Weber at 106, Sioux County’s Josh Kling at 170, Chadron’s Alex Doescher at 182, Hyannis’ Wyatt Rowe at 220 and Chadron’s Devin Mitchell at 285.

Bridgeport will host the Western Trails Conference Tournament on Thursday. The Bulldogs will be joined in the field by Bayard, Gordon-Rushville, Hemingford, Kimball, Mitchell, Morrill and Banner County.
