Duke girls whip Tigers by 22 on Hastings hardcourt

HASTINGS – The York defense created a lot of offense on Saturday night at Hastings.

The Duke girls ran their season record to 4-1 with a solid 52-30 win over the Hastings Tigers in non-conference hoops.

York's defense forced 17 first-half turnovers and the York offense took advantage and led 17-10 at the end of the first quarter. With an 8-2 run over the first 4:36 of the second quarter the lead went to 25-12 and York put it on cruise control from that point on.

“I think we played pretty good defense tonight,” stated York head coach Matt Kern. “This was the first time we have played back-to-back Friday and Saturday night games so I was really interested to see how our legs would hold up and for the most part I think the girls did well. This was a very solid win.”

York took a 33-17 lead to the second half and Hastings could not find any offense to make a run at the Dukes.

Through four quarters the Dukes lead was 42-22 and York had no trouble closing out the win with all reserves on the floor when the final horn sounded.

In scoring York was led by Erin Malleck with 18 points as the junior hit six field goals, one 3-pointer and was 5-5 at the free throw line. Scoring 11 points was Hannah Riley who also hit a 3-pointer in the win, while Veronica Botts tossed in seven.

Hastings was led by Bailey Petzoldt with six, Taylor Musgrave was charted with five and four players added four points each.

The Dukes were 11-21 from the free throw line while the Tigers hit 4-10 attempts.

York (4-1) will face a tough test on Tuesday night as the Fillmore Central Panthers bring their 6-1 mark to York for a final post Christmas match up. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

“That's a good basketball team over there,” said Kern of Fillmore Central. “They will come at us and play us tough all night long. A great way to go to the Christmas break.”
