One record for both winning teams at Saturday’s Ralston Ram Relays got the second half of the high school swimming season off to a fast start.
Millard West’s girls and Omaha Creighton Prep successfully defended their titles at the 47th annual event at Ralston High School with one meet record and five total victories apiece.
The Wildcats topped a 13-year-old record in the 200-yard backstroke relay and finished with 312 points, 42 more than runner-up Omaha Westside. Morgan Guy, Claire Mueller, Tara Goss and Erin Oeltjen won in 1:53.83, well ahead of the 1:54.57 by a Millard West team in 2000.
“We thought our back end would be tough with Goss and Oeltjen,” Wildcats coach Tracy Stauffer said. “Guy and Mueller also had great swims.”
Oeltjen, Kacy Thurman, Brooke Stilmock and Goss won the 200 butterfly relay in 1:47.82, missing another meet record by 0.18 seconds — one set by Millard West in 2009.
Prep bettered its 2012 meet record in the 200 breaststroke relay and won three of the last five events to pull away for a 332-236 win against Millard South in the boys meet. Szymmy Day, Karl Schaenzer, Jake Hangren and Alex Penrice finished in 1:54.14, 0.29 seconds faster than last year’s Junior Jays.
The Patriots set the other meet record by winning the first event of the boys meet, the 200 medley relay, one of the three events at the meet that will be contested at the Feb. 22 and 23 state meet in Lincoln.
Indiana recruit Bob Glover, Neil Girmus, Jacob Malashock and Jim Glover teamed up to win in 1:36.33, just ahead of Prep’s 1:36.67. Those are the two fastest times this season, and Millard South’s swim missed The World-Herald’s all-time Top 10 by 0.23 seconds.
The mark was also a pool record, replacing the 1:36.41 by the 2011 Creighton Prep quartet. The Junior Jays shaved 3.01 seconds off their previous season best from the Dec. 1 Omaha Burke Invitational.
“I was happy with a 1:36,” Prep coach Tom Beck said. “I put our entry time pretty fast, so if we beat our splits we were doing well. We were under our seed time, so it turned out good.”
Beck was pleased that all 33 swimmers on his roster had a chance to compete in at least one race.
“That’s one of the first times we’ve been able to do that in this meet,” Beck said. “So that was a really complete team effort today.”
Both Stauffer and Beck said a meet like this is the right kind of event coming off the holiday break and a long gap — three weeks for most teams, more for others — between competitions other than duals.
“It’s a fun meet because everybody loves relays,” Stauffer said. “Coming off the break, there’s less pressure and you don’t have to get right back into an invitational.”
Beck said the relays also give many swimmers a chance to show coaches how they can compete against some of the state’s top teams.
“You get a chance to put guys in a position to step up,” Beck said. “You don’t know what everybody else is going to enter, and it’s a fun event to get competition started again.”
