SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa — Sioux City North left no doubt it belongs on top of the Missouri River Conference wrestling pile once again.
The Stars — already perfect in league dual action — sent seven grapplers to the finals and crowned five to win the MRC traditional tournament Thursday night at Sergeant Bluff-Luton Elementary School. Sergeant Bluff-Luton had four winners and every other school managed one champion.
North won the league meet two years ago but finished third last season behind Sergeant Bluff and Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson.
“We knew we had a young team that needed to mature along,” North coach John Torno said. “One of the things we wanted to do was regain both the dual team side and the individual side. I expected today to be a little closer, but we wrestled well. And kudos to us.”
The Stars racked up 234.5 points, well ahead of the host school (214) and Thomas Jefferson (145).
Three ranked wrestlers won for North. Class 3-A No. 3 Dustin Fuller (170 pounds) pinned his finals opponent, while No. 10 Dalton Hansen (126) earned a technical fall and No. 8 Shane Gill (120) churned out a decision.
Dylan Thomas (182) added a technical fall and Max Stewart (285) upset Abraham Lincoln’s Jordan Bywater with a first-period pin.
Sergeant Bluff got victories from its four ranked members. They were 2-A No. 1 Colton McCrystal (132), No. 8 Steven Garcia (138), No. 6 Brett Tomoson (152) and No. 7 Tyler Nguyen (220).
Among Council Bluffs representatives, Abraham Lincoln’s Jordan Peterson (113) and Thomas Jefferson’s Colton Clingenpeel (106) enjoyed their evenings. But just about everyone else left the meet wishing things had turned out differently.
“It’s kind of disappointing. We didn’t wrestle up to our standards,” Thomas Jefferson coach August Manz said.
The night’s biggest upset came at 145, when unrated Taron Flemister of Sioux City West nipped 3-A No. 9 Charles Weaver of T.J. 6-3 in overtime.
In the two finals between ranked competitors, Garcia subdued 3-A No. 9 Jason Wallace of T.J. 8-3 and McCrystal pinned 3-A No. 10 Alberto Jurado of North in 1:22.
Thomas Jefferson turned in its best-ever finish at the meet last season as a runner-up. Unfortunately for the Jackets, not nearly enough broke their way Thursday to contend.
Abraham Lincoln’s lone bright spot, Peterson, appeared sharp despite missing time at various points during the winter.
“He looked like the guy that went to state for me last year,” Daniels said. “The rest of the guys, I don’t know. I don’t know if they’re battling sickness or have had too many matches. It just didn’t seem like we were ready to wrestle.”
Also winning individual titles were Sioux City East’s Mitch Otto (160) and Sioux City Heelan’s Christian Brobst. Every school at the meet but Sergeant Bluff and Heelan will compete at a district meet in Le Mars on Feb. 9.
