After six swims in January earned him spots on the all-time charts, Jacob Molacek went straight to the top Saturday in a seventh event.
The Omaha Creighton Prep junior swam the fastest time in state history in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 43rd annual Millard South boys swimming and diving invitational. The Junior Jays won the team title with 248 points, 23 better than runner-up Millard South.
Molacek’s time of 55.92 seconds topped the 56.10 that former Millard South standout and current Omaha Marian coach David Anderson swam to win the 1998 state meet.
“He hasn’t had the opportunity to swim that race since early November, so he was champing at the bit to do it,” Prep coach Tom Beck said. “We knew he was swimming well in practice this week, but you have to go out and do it.
“His last swim was especially good.”
Earlier in the meet, Molacek led off Prep’s 200 medley relay team with a sizzling 23.22 split in the 50 backstroke as the Junior Jays charged to a meet record time of 1:35.38. Szymmy Day, Ryan Tate and Sean Tate also were part of that quartet that now ranks No. 7 on The World-Herald’s all-time list.
Molacek then set his second meet record by winning the 200 individual medley in 1:52.21, just off his season best of 1:51.73. Then came what might have been Molacek’s most dazzling performance of the day.
As the anchor leg of Prep’s 200 freestyle relay team, Molacek finished his 50 yards in 20.05. The state record in the 50 free is 20.45, but only the leadoff leg on a relay team can qualify as an open 50 time.
Prep set the meet record with Carter Deras, Mike Bauwens and Sean Tate teaming with Molacek to win in 1:26.87, a time that was more than two seconds faster than the previous record set by Prep in 2011.
Even with all of the records, Beck said, Molacek knows there is room for improvement in all events.
“When you start to get to a certain level, best times don’t come all the time,” Beck said. “He took a couple of short strokes on his fly that frustrated him a little early in the IM, so he knows he has a few things to clean up.”
The other meet record set Saturday came from Millard South’s Bob Glover in the 100 backstroke. The Indiana recruit won in 51.44 to top the record of 52.73 he set in 2011.
There was a mild upset in the 200 freestyle. Omaha Central’s Christian Pospisil, swimming in the next-to-last heat, touched in 1:48.83. That time was 0.04 seconds faster than the mark by the winner of the final heat, Neil Girmus of Millard South.
